We've all had life transitions with lockdowns and reopenings. Sally's summary of Bruce Feiler's talk provides some insights. A key one is that we tend to get one big disruption every 12-18 months of our lives. It's almost as though disruptions were the norm. (To be fair, a pandemic lockdown is a bigger disruption than any previous in my life!)
Style: Katrin Mantele
You might think Katrin’s style is a little crazy. That’s probably because her alias is “the little crazy one” in German.
It’s easy to identify a sketchnote by Katrin, look at her playful lettering style. Although her headings are clear sans serifs, her body text switches between cursive and separated letters and makes use of different styles.
Her approach of using light grey shading in contrast to the bright accent colour helps to add depth to her drawings while keeping them clear.
This is easy to do in a tool like procreate but can be trickier with analog pens. My pro tip is to test some brush pens in shades of grey and check if if your outline pen (for me a pigma micron) blends in or not.
You may just need to wait a moment for it to dry.
Bonus: sketchnote selfies!
In the summer of 2017 I (and every other participant of the international sketchnote camp in Hamburg) created a sketchnote selfie.
They were all collected into a selfie book which was handed out at the camp.
Since then, sketchnote selfies have become one of my go-to introductory activities for sketchnotes as the topic is relevant and personal to everyone.
For this year's International sketchnote camp, we're creating a new selfie book and so I thought I'd share a couple resources.
Here's a link to browse everyones selfies on Instagram.
Here's my get started with sketchnotes article which takes people through creating a sketchnote selfie.
Even if you've made a sketchnote selfie before, it's fun to make a new one every now and then. Just like taking a selfie every few years you'll notice some changes in the content and style you use.
Send me a reply if you make one.
Oh and here's my new selfie for the camp.
Bye, bye, bye.
Sorry for the delay in this week’s roundup. Last weekend was rather dramatic with a lot of vomiting in my household (plus Revue was down for a while, the sketchnote camp stuff took some time) so I took the pressure of the newsletter from myself.
I really appreciate everyone who takes the time to read it.
Thank you.
Chris
P.S. I updated my site with a different theme and added a portfolio of some sketchnotes. Thanks to my tech enabler in chief, Chad Moore, I might be looking at moving to a different website service and using my name instead of learn create share. Feedback always welcome.
